The show was nominated for five Tony Awards and won three, including the Tony Award for Best Musical. 1776 was produced by Stuart Ostrow and directed by Peter H. Hunt. The production featured William Daniels as John Adams, Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson, Howard Da Silva as Benjamin Franklin, Ron Holgate as Richard Henry Lee, and Virginia Vestoff as Abigail Adams.
