Who would have guessed ?
On the 06th of April 1966, The Beatles layed down the basic track of what would be known as "Tomorrow Never Knows" as per another ringoism. This was to set a new genre, this would be once again a new sonic adventure were the four lads, George Martin and Geoff Emerick will record on tape what is the most incredible anachronism in rock music.
Who would have guessed ?
One of the most famous episode which occurred during the recording is how Lennon (who had always some trouble to explain clearly and in a technical language what he required) asked the young Geoff to have his voice sounding "like the Dalai Lama chanting from a mountaintop, miles away". When Geoff got the idea to record the vocal through a Leslie speaker (a large wooden box that contained an amp and two sets of revolving speakers for an Hammond organ) he announced to George Martin: "I think I have an idea about what to do for John's voice".
Setting down their cups of tea, John settled behind the mic and Ringo behind his kit, ready to overdub vocals and drums on top of the recorded loop; Paul and George Harrison headed up to the control room. Once everyone was in place and ready to go, George Martin got on the talkback mic: "Stand by... here it comes." Then the engineer started the loop playing back. Ringo began playing along, hitting the drums with a fury, and John began singing, eyes closed, head back.
"Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream..." Lennon's voice sounded like it never had before, eerily disconnected, distant yet compelling. The effect seemed to perfectly complement the esoteric lyrics he was chanting. Everyone in the control room looked stunned.
Through the glass we could see John begin smiling. At the end of the first verse, he gave an exuberant thumbs-up and McCartney and Harrison began slapping each other on the back.
"It's the Dalai Lennon !" Paul shouted.
Who would have guessed ?
Who would have guessed that on the 22nd of August 1962, less than four years before, a young punk band was just waiting for the human beat box to be their drummer in order to deliver a splendid live performance of... "Tomorrow Never Knows". It took place in a dark cave, meters underground, the singer provided the lyrics, the bass player provided the seagulls (watch him smiling at 28'' and 48''), the lead guitarist offer the best backward solo (watch him at 1'26''), the drummer enjoys himself so much that he will throw the name of the song. At 1'45'' the Leslie kick in and you can watch the ecstasy on the face of this young woman. Suddenly the summer 1962 got mixed with April 1966 and goes straight into the summer of love 1988. That's the magic of this song... At 2'26'' it's too late, the youth has been perverted and nothing will ever be the same again. The doors of the perception have been smashed in by this little punk band who decided to twist what they were recording.
Two revolving speakers on REVOLVER... get it ?
Who would have guessed that The Beatles played that song live, long before they recorded it properly in the EMI studios on Abbey Road ?
NB: I used large extracts of the fantastic Geoff Emerick's book "Here, There and Everywhere" published by Gotham Books and that can be purchased here ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Here-There-Everywhere-Recording-Beatles/dp/1592401791 ), there ( http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbninquiry.asp?ean=9781592401796&z=y) and everywhere. It's a must have ! A saucerful of secrets if I may say !
