Blades was honored for his contributions to music and culture, a trait apparent in his career since he first paired politically tinged lyrics with salsa music and awakened audiences to the music as social commentary. He has distinguished himself as not only a musician but also an actor, appearing in 32 films and earning three Emmy nominations. As a humanitarian, he was named Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations against racism. Active in politics and social activism, he serves as Panama's Minister of Tourism. For his musicianship he has garnered six Grammies, the coveted 2005 ASCAP Founders Award, and a reputation as "the Latin Bruce Springsteen." Juan Luis Guerra, awarded the distinguished alumni honor during last year's Latin Culture week, credits Blades for inspiring him to begin writing his now famous lyrics.
